Gabriel Monod

Historian

After graduating first in History from the École normale supérieure in 1865, Gabriel Monod attended the Humboldt University of Berlin, where he studied under Georg Waitz. Bringing German methodology back to France, he later taught Medieval History at the ENS, where Charles Péguy was his student. In 1897, Monod became the first academic to publicly defend Alfred Dreyfus. He was elected Chair of General History and Historical Method in 1905 at the Collège de France, and lectured with a particular focus on Michelet until 1910.
