George Sand

Novelist and critic

At 27, George Sand was the most successful writer in Europe. Dostoevsky translated her novel. Taine named her ‘a stupendous and beautiful genius, a natural and superior artist, one of the foremost writers of the century’. Sand published 70 novels and 50 collections of novellas, short stories, essays and plays, and engaged with social and political movements and intellectual debates of her time. With many publishers and journalists she collaborated, and in 1844 founded her own newspaper, L’Éclaireur de l’Indre.
