Hippolyte Taine

Philosopher, historian and critic

An original thinker, Hippolyte Taine entered in 1848 the École normale supérieure, first amongst a brilliant cohort. An historian of the French Revolution and a critic of art and literature, he was the author of The Origins of Contemporary France, The Philosophy of Art and History of English Literature. Incomparable was his style. Formidable was his scholarship. Immense was his influence. Taine and Renan were considered the two eyes of France’s intellectual life in the second half of the nineteenth century.
