Jean-Baptiste Antoine Suard

Journalist and translator

Editor of Le Journal étranger and of La Gazette de France before being elected in 1772 a member of the French Academy, of which he would become in 1803 Permanent Secretary, Jean-Baptiste Antoine Suard was a close friend of Condorcet’s and was well acquainted with circles of Enlightenment thinkers. Shortly after Hume’s death, he translated the philosopher’s autobiography, with near immediacy that testifies to Suard’s astute judgement and the vibrancy of French journalism at the time.
