Mu Xin

Painter and poet

Wryly naming himself ‘a Robinson Crusoe of literature, a literary UFO’, Mu Xin surmounted his time. A graduate of Lin Fengmian’s Hangzhou Art Academy in 1948, he taught at high schools and worked in the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Institute. Then came the revolution, and imprisonment, and house confinement. After half a lifetime tormented and squandered, he lived in New York between 1982 and 2007, where he started publishing, with a vengeance, prose, poems and stories, becoming a literary sensation in Taiwan, then in mainland China. A rare stylist in the Chinese language and a resolute aesthete, he defied politically-induced linguistic deformation through his writerly practice, which springs out intact from the cosmopolitan tradition of his youth.
