Shi Zhecun

Novelist, essayist and translator

Shi Zhecun was a major figure in Shanghai’s modernist, cosmopolitan literary movement in the 1920s and 30s, editing Les Contemporains, publishing works by his friends, writing nearly a hundred experimental novellas, while also translating Schnitzler, and later Vazov, Sienkiewicz and Nexø, amongst others. A classical scholar, for twenty years he taught at various universities after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War; and after the end of the Cultural Revolution, wrote a great number of essays as well as his memoirs.
